There were, we thought, two possibilities: Warner Bros. would either release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters, then stream it later, or the studio would push the movie’s release to summer 2021. Neither were correct, as it turns out.

Only four days ago, we posted this article examining the two options it was rumored that Warner would choose from. Today they announced something completely different: WW84 will premiere in theaters in the U.S. and on HBO Max simultaneously on December 25th.

Not only that, but if you are already subscribed to that service, you can view the movie for no additional fee. The going monthly rate for HBO Max is $14.99 a month.

This arrangement will be good for a month, before the blockbuster is pulled from the streamer. It will run in theaters only from then on. And since HBO Max is only available domestically, international markets will get a theatrical release on December 16th.

At the end of the theatrical run, the film will be available through traditional windows. That means it will head to digital retailers like Amazon and iTunes, before it could return to, you guessed it, HBO Max.

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins posted a letter today endorsing the move, and encouraging fans to enjoy the film in whatever way they wish to.
