One of the most well-received big budget epics of 2022 has a sequel in the works.

RRR is an Indian action-fantasy that, despite a run time of more than 3 hours, has grossed over $100 million globally so far, with $11.375M in U.S. receipts. The movie is the fictitious story about two legendary revolutionaries, played by Ram Charan Teja and N. T. Rama Rao Jr., who must fight for their country in the 1920s.

S.S. Rajamouli, who directed the movie, told Variety that a story for the sequel is currently being worked out by his father, the screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad. The filmmaker discussed the sequel at a screening in Chicago over the weekend.

“My father is the story writer for all my films. We discussed a bit about [‘RRR 2’] and he’s working on the story,” said Rajamouli.

The Telugu-language historical fiction epic fictionalizes the stories of real-life 1920s Indian freedom fighters Komaram Bheem (Rao Jr.,) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan), who in the film become fast friends united against a common enemy, the occupying, colonial British. In reality, the two never met.

It is streaming on Netflix where it has become the platform’s most popular movie, viewed for over 47 million hours worldwide and subtitled into 15 different languages. It is the only non-English language film to trend for 10 consecutive weeks on the service.

The film is a marvel, with music, dance, elaborate fight scenes featuring action choreography, stunt work, pyrotechnics and VFX, including one incredible sequence in which Bheem unleashes tigers, leopards and other wild animals from a truck to attack the British. It is one of the most expensive movies ever made in India, with a budget of $72 million.

It has received love from critics and audiences alike, with reviewer John Powers from NPR saying, “from the opening riot to the assault on the governor’s mansion to the big prison escape — during which Ram rides atop Bheem’s shoulders with guns ablazing — RRR contains more exciting action scenes than all the Marvel movies put together. RRR possesses a delirious inventiveness and originality that audiences will love.”

Rajamouli recently told Entertainment Weekly, “”Yes, I was surprised with the reception from the West,” he said. “A good story is a good story for everyone, but I didn’t think I could make films for Western sensibilities. I never believed myself. So when it came out on Netflix and people started watching it, and word of mouth started spreading, when the critics started giving out good reviews, yes I was really, really surprised.”

At this early stage, there are no plot details or a projected release date.
