On a spaceship, everyone will hear you scream. Everyone still alive, that is.

In a trailer for Alien: Romulus, the eighth film in the Alien franchise (we’re not counting Alien vs. Predator), a group of young people wishing to escape their dreary existence, hop onto a derelict spacecraft in order to escape. Unfortunately for them, that ship already has some passengers on board.

The film, set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) is not a standalone adventure; according to director Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe) told The Hollywood Reporter that Romulus will be connected to both films.

“You’ll find those connections with the other movies,” he told THR. He added, ” I love all of those movies. I didn’t want to omit or ignore any of them when it comes to connections at a story level, character level, technology level and creature level. There’s always connections from Alien to Alien: Covenant.”

Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Civil War) stars in the film in a role that is reminiscent of Alien and Aliens character Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), if the trailer is any indication. Isabelle Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu play the rest of the explorers.

The trailer doesn’t last long enough to offer a really good look at the Xenomorph, but there is a brief chase sequence and even more unnerving, a shot of a bloody suspended animation pod. We also see snippets of the face-hugging, chest-bursting action you’d expect in an Alien movie.

Álvarez and 20th Century Studios had initially planned to release the film on Hulu, the same way the studio released Prey, a 2022 prequel to Predator. But Álvarez said in the interview that shortly after shooting began, 20th had a change of heart and decided to put the film in theaters.

Álvarez wrote the script for Alien: Romulus with Rodo Sayagues, and original Alien director Ridley Scott is listed as a producer. The film arrives in theaters on August 16th of this year.
