If “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was a person, it would be at retirement age now.

However, that’s not stopping the enduring holiday favorite, recorded when artist Brenda Lee was only 13, from finally topping Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, where it took over the number one spot on Tuesday. The song was in the number two position for the last four years, always behind Mariah Carey’s (seemingly) unstoppable hit “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was written by Johnny Marks and produced by Owen Bradley and released in 1958. This marks the pair’s first ever number one song on the Billboard list.

The song recently received a promotional push from Lee and UMG, her recording label. They released a new music video for the song, and Lee has released a new holiday EP called A Rockin’ Christmas with Brenda Lee, where she covers other seasonal classics, like “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

Lee has even taken to TikTok, where’s she’s amassed over 88,000 followers.

The ascension to number one set numerous chart records. Lee, at age 78, is the oldest artist to top the chart. The prior record was set by 62-year-old Louis Armstrong with “Hello, Dolly!” in 1964. It’s also been 63 years and change since she had her first number one hit, “I’m Sorry” in 1963, which sets another record.

It’s now the single with the longest run from its release to the No. 1 spot: 65 years. It debuted on the Hot 100 in 1960, then took just under 63 years to hit the top, setting a record for the longest climb ever to number one.

Carey’s 1994 hit is still in the running, of course, sitting in the number two position on the charts. Listeners in the holiday spirit have elevated other Christmas anthems above the usual chart-toppers. Bobby Helms’ recording of “Jingle Bell Rock,” Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” are sitting in the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively, ahead of artists like Taylor Swift and Doja Cat.
