It’s Gonna Be Spic-ay: NSYNC Takes a Bite Out of ‘Hot Ones’ Where They Dish on Their Career, Reunion
Talk about hot takes.
NSYNC, one of the hottest ’90s boy bands, is back, and part of their reunion involved downing some of the hottest wing sauces out there.
The band, consisting of Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, are back with a new song, “Better Place” for the upcoming animated Trolls Band Together movie. So the five assembled around a table to do what many others have done before: try to eat chicken wings dipped in progressively hotter sauces – oh, and talk to host Sean Evans about some of their most memorable pop culture moments.
Around bites of wings, the band tried to rank their top five songs, talked about who was and wasn’t in a Star Wars prequel, and even that “It’s gonna be May” meme sparked by JT’s odd (and possibly Swedish) pronunciation.
Which songs are the best? After a brief debate between the bandmates, Bass offered their top five: “I Thought She Knew,” “Bye Bye Bye,” “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” “It’s Gonna Be Me,” “Drive Myself Crazy,” and added “This I Promise You” as an honorable mention.
The band also shared some intel on their new song together saying “Better Place” makes the most of their old sound but still feels “modern.”
Only some of the members were cast in 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, which made the others a bit jealous – but only briefly. Timberlake confessed that he and Bass were “so butt hurt” they weren’t included. Meanwhile, Kirkpatrick, Chasez, and Fatone revealed they had to learn some light-saber “choreography” since they were cast as Jedi. Of course, it didn’t matter as the scene with the NSYNC boys was scrapped. Both Timberlake and Bass joked that they felt relieved that their bandmates had been cut out of the film.
Timberlake was also asked about his infamous “It’s Gonna Be May” meme and explained why he sang it that way: the switch from “Me” to “May” was a specific note that came from Swedish songwriter-producer Max Martin.
“The parts of their English that were broken actually made them catchier songwriters, because they would put words away they almost didn’t make sense but when you sang them, they were more memorable,” said Timberlake.
