Peter Jackson Engineers A Beatles Reunion Using Footage From ‘Get Back’ For McCartney’s U.S. Tour
John Lennon and Paul McCartney sung their first duet together in 53 years last night.
The former Beatles and songwriting partners were able to croon “I’ve Got a Feeling” together during the opening date of McCartney’s United States tour in Spokane, Washington, all thanks to director Peter Jackson, who put together the mammoth documentary Get Back, which aired on Disney+ late last year.
Jackson created the opportunity for McCartney by separating Lennon’s vocal track to allow McCartney could sing to it, and cutting together the montage playing on the screens behind McCartney onstage.
McCartney credited Jackson’s effort during the show. “So, Peter Jackson, the director of the Get Back film, he texts me one day,” McCartney said after finishing the song. “And he says, ‘we can extract John’s voice. He can sing with you live.’”
He went on, shrugging and saying he responded to Jackson by simply stating: “And I thought, well …”
Jackson made the critically acclaimed three-part documentary series using 60 hours of unseen footage of what was to be their final moments together as a band. The song was originally recorded for the Let It Be album the band released in 1970.
