“Rush” the Stage: Iconic Band Announces “Fifty Something” Tour Minus Founding Member Neil Peart

The surviving members of Rush want to return to living in the “Limelight”.
At an intimate question-and-answer session with select fans and media members held at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on Sunday, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson fielded a question about whether they would ever tour again. The two joked with each other for a bit before Lee said, “I kind of think that we should tour next year.” The audience applauded loudly once it was clear the two were serious.
The “Fifty Something” tour, is described as a “celebration of Rush’s music, legacy, and the life of late drummer and lyricist Neil Peart” and is scheduled to pass through seven cities in North America, kicking off with two nights at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, the site of their last show, on June 7th and 9th.
A replacement for Peart has been chosen: Drumming for the band will be Anika Nilles, an award-winning German composer and producer who previously toured with Jeff Beck and has released four solo albums.
In the session (see below) Lee said the decision to tour again wasn’t an easy one, especially after the loss of Peart. “It was a very sad time, and it took time for us to even contemplate,” he said, adding, “And how do you replace someone who is irreplaceable?”
Lifeson and Lee they began jamming together on Rush songs together and found it to be a joyous thing. “We were laughing so hard, and we were enjoying it so much, and it was almost like playing those songs dispelled the dark clouds,” Lee said.
Rush, who hailed from Toronto, released their self-titled debut album in 1974. Its first single “Working Man” became popular in the United States in large part thanks to Donna Halper, who was the music director at WMMS in Cleveland, Ohio. They released a string of AOR-friendly hits like “Tom Sawyer,” “Closer to the Heart,” “Limelight,” and “Spirit of Radio.” The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
The Fifty Something tour also has dates scheduled in Mexico City, Fort Worth, Chicago, New York and Toronto and will conclude with a single concert in Cleveland on September 17th.
