Marvel Takes Pride in Diversity: Gay Captain to Debut in ‘The United States of Captain America’
There’s more than one Captain America; in fact, there’s as many Captain Americas as there are states in well, America.
Marvel plans to introduce a new volume of stories from all over the country, including that of Aaron Fischer, a young LGBTQ+ hero Known as the “Captain America of the Railways,” who does his best to protect his community even though he doesn’t possess the powers of Steve Rogers’ super-soldier serum.
Fischer will be included in the upcoming United States of Captain America comic book miniseries, a new series that will explore “everyday people from all walks of life who’ve taken up the mantle of Captain America to defend their communities.” Entertainment Weekly reported.
In the storyline, Fischer, who protects homeless youths and runaways, is discovered when Steve Rogers and three other characters launch a mission to find Steve’s missing shield, the report said.
“Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders, and everyday folks pushing for a better life,” creator Aaron Trujillo told the outlet.
“He stands for the oppressed, and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers, and helps inspire the next generation of heroes,” Trujillo said.
Aaron was illustrated by Jan Bazaldua, who told the publication he’s proud to have been a part of the first for the series.
“As a transgender person, I am happy to be able to present an openly gay person who admires Captain America and fights against evil to help those who are almost invisible to society,” Bazaldua said.
The first issue of the new miniseries hits the stands June 2, which is Pride Month.
