Tomi Adeyemi’s acclaimed Children of Blood and Bone book series is coming to the big screen under the Paramount banner.

According to Deadline, Adeyemi will write the script and executive produce the film adaptation of her series, which pulls inspiration from West African mythology and takes place in the fictional country of Orïsha. The books, two of which are published with the third book in the trilogy out soon, follow the character Zélie Adebola as she attempts to restore magic in the kingdom after years of being suppressed alongside her fellow magic practitioners, the maji. Critics praised the novel’s examination of issues such as classism, enslavement, and oppression.

Universal, Amazon and Netflix were reportedly among the bidders, but Paramount came in with a huge offer, which included “a seven-figure screenwriting guarantee as well creative approvals for Adeyemi,” and a surefire theatrical release. Disney Studios was reported to have been the front-runner for the rights a year ago, but were out of the running this time around for undisclosed reasons.

“Paramount’s passion and enthusiasm to bring this story to life has been incredible,” Adeyemi said in a statement. “We are all so excited for this new chapter and are already hard at work.”

Adeyemi is adapting the screenplay and will executive produce along with Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Entertainment (which made the Twilight and Maze Runner movies), and Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment (which made the Percy Jackson movies).

“Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone has not only become a phenomenon in the YA world, it has transformed every expectation of what world-building fantasy can be,” said Daria Cercek, Co-President of Paramount Pictures Motion Group. “It’s with enormous pride that our studio — along with Tomi and our partners Wyck, Marty and Karen — set out to bring this franchise to life on the big screen. With its thought-provoking and timely themes, we know that this story will resonate with a global audience.”

Children of Blood and Bone debuted at the number one spot on The New York Times bestseller list and has received a Hugo Award and an Andre Norton Award. The sequel, Children of Virtue and Vengeance was published in 2019 and also debuted in the number one spot. The third and final book in the trilogy does not have a firm release date. but there are predictions that the book will be published sometime in 2023. The series is published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers.
