Going forward, it’s going to become a little bit more expensive to be a Dungeon Master.

Nearly 50 years after its invention, Dungeon & Dragons is as cool as it has ever been. The tabletop dice-rolling fantasy game has been featured in major media like Stranger Things and the theatrical Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, not to mention an upcoming live-action series on Paramount Plus and D&D streaming channel, bringing ever more people to a game once considered by popular culture to be only for nerds.

But that newfound acceptance also comes with a price, or in this case, a price increase.

Beginning with the upcoming sourcebook Bigby Presents: Glory to the Giants, physical Dungeon & Dragons books will now cost 20% more, Wizards of the Coast announced Monday. This works out to a retail priced of $59.95 instead of $49.95, representing the first price increase the game maker has announced in nine years.

Wizards of the Coast said the increase comes from rising costs involved with creating new books and a desire to ensure the quality of future projects. “As materials, transportation, and other production costs have increased over the nine years since we released the fifth edition of D&D, we’ve kept the price of our books stable. Because we are committed to maintaining high standards and quality products for our fans, we have made the difficult decision to increase the price of our new release print books, starting with Glory of the Giants,” said Liz Schuh, Director of Product Management for D&D in a press release.

They added that the price change will not impact any physical books released prior to the upcoming Giants expansion. It also won’t impact any digital versions of sourcebooks, which will instead stay at their current prices until further notice.

Upcoming products, like a Planescape expansion scheduled for an October 17th release, will carry the new price, but the cost of revised core 5E rulebooks planned for 2024 is not known. Wizards did say it plans to keep releasing four new books every week.

Wizards is planning to release a full-fledged update of the original three core rulebooks, known to fans as the Player’s Handbook (PHB), the Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG), and the Monster Manual (MM). Wizards said it is working to make those books more complete and more usable than ever before — all while retaining continuity and ensuring the new rules retain compatibility with every 5th edition product released before the newest upgrade.

“For so many people, those books are their introductory experience to the game,” said game design architect Chris Perkins in a group interview with press earlier this month. “Those books are denser than some of our later books, the monsters aren’t as easy or as fun to play as some of our more recent books, and finding things is not as easy…so making sure that our gateway to the game is as strong, as beautiful, [and] as accessible as possible I think is very important for the longevity of the game — and just for people’s enjoyment.”

Glory of the Giants will be released on August 15th, and will focus on the subclasses of giants and exploring their lore, including their religions, culture, and societies. The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons will be also be released on that date.
