This isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke: Jones Soda is introducing a new 420-friendly line of soft drinks (and more) on April 1st.

Jones Soda Co. is naming it’s new product Mary Jones, a play on one of marijuana’s nicknames, Mary Jane. The cannabis-infused beverages and edibles will be sourced, produced and sold entirely within California at first, though the company has plans to expand into other states where cannabis is legal.

California has a legal cannabis market of roughly $4 billion and nearly a third of adult Californians shop in dispensaries, creating a huge market for its products.

The first Mary Jones products will include:

  • A 10mg cannabis-infused soda sold in single dose 12-ounce bottles with a four-pack carrier;
  • A 100mg cannabis-infused soda packaged in a 16-ounce, 10-serving can;
  • A 1,000mg syrup cannabis tincture designed for mixing with other drinks, using as a food topping or taking in small oral doses, initially available in a 4-ounce bottle;
  • 5mg cannabis-infused gummies shaped like miniature Jones soda bottles, sold in 20-count packages with a mini-four-pack carrier build-it-yourself option.

The sodas and other items will be available in Jones’ fan-favorite flavors Root Beer, Berry Lemonade, Green Apple and Orange Cream. The company also plans a rotating selection of seasonal and limited-edition flavors planned for future release.

“The Mary Jones brand is a game changer because, unlike every other company in the space, we bring an iconic brand with an equity that eclipses any current cannabis brand in the market, passionate fans who love our signature flavors, and a 25-year history of having fun with consumers by putting our fans’ photos on our labels, their quotes under our bottle caps and being available in record shops as often as the grocery store. This is real earned credibility you can’t fabricate,” said Bohb Blair, Chief Brand Officer, Mary Jones Cannabis Inc. in a statement.

“With all of these advantages, our irreverent personality and putting a cannabis twist on our brand traditions, we believe we are uniquely positioned to dominate the category.”

The design of Mary Jones’ packaging uses Jones Soda’s brand recognition by keeping the same font for “Jones,” but adds a twist by turning the “N” backwards. Following local regulations, the products will have the dosage in larger font than any other claims.

Jones Soda only does a fraction of the business as its larger soft drink rivals like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, and so can take these kinds of risks. For 2021, Jones Soda reported revenue of $14.8 million, less than .04% of Coke’s revenue for the full year. Pepsi is adding alcoholic beverages to its soft drink portfolio though, adding Hard Mountain Dew to its product line.
