Is anyone, even a superhero, truly invincible?

Invincible is a new animated superhero show based on the graphic novel published by Image Comics and created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker that tries to answer that question. Amazon Prime Video streams the TV version of this series which has eight episodes in total for this season.

Invincible is the story of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) the teenage son of the world’s strongest superhero from another world, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) and his human mother Debbie (Sandra Oh). After finally gaining his alien-heritage superpowers (his father calls him a late bloomer) he begins trying to use those abilities to live up to his father’s reputation. The world is full of many different superheroes and super teams, The Guardians of the Globe being the most loved by the public.

In the first few episodes, Mark tries balancing his home, school and superhero lives; training with his Dad to master his newfound powers while also dealing with bullies and dates. He eventually meets a group of heroes called the Teen Team who help show him the ropes of being a superhero. This team consists of Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow), Rex Splosion (T.J. Miller), Robot (Zachary Quinto) and its leader Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), who Mark grows close to.

While Mark is discovering himself, Omni-Man is caught up in a horrifying mystery that is being investigated by Cecil Steadman (Walton Goggins) the director of the government agency that deals with all things super, and Damien Darkblood (Clancy Brown), a demon detective who is freshly released from hell.

The series is based on a fairly graphic graphic novel, and does contain large and colorful amounts of gore and blood. Invincible has good art, action and an animation style, and it has a great voice cast. The story so far is well-paced and keeps the audience interested. There’s an especially shocking and violent twist at the end of the first episode that certainly grabs your attention and makes you want more, but you will have to wait, as the next episode premieres on April 2nd on Prime.
