Review: Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ Imagines a World Where Anything Could Happen, And it Does [SPOILERS]
In What If…?, Marvel’s newest show on Disney+, the possibilities are endless.
Marvel’s latest foray into episodic television is an animated series this time around, with an anthology style of storytelling focusing on numerous hypothetical alternative realities to events in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, or What Ifs. The show is directed by Bryan Andrews (Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange) and features a number of returning actors appearing and reprising their roles from the MCU.
The series is told and narrated from the point of view of The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright, Westworld), a cosmic entity with the ability to view all different realities, but unable to interfere with them. The first episode takes place in a universe where Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) became The First Avenger instead of Steve Rogers, whose voice is provided by Josh Keaton in this episode.
Taking place during the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, in this reality after an attack in the Super Soldier Serum lab leaves Steve Rogers injured, Peggy Carter steps in to take his place in becoming a Super Soldier, known as Captain Carter.
Assisted by a non-super Steve Rogers and the genius Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), the allies take to the front against the Nazis, Hydra and The Red Skull (Ross Marquand). Armed with her shield of vibranium, this time decaled with a Union Jack, Captain Carter and her team take down Nazi forces, Hydra labs and supply lines, eventually acquiring the Tesseract and capturing the Hydra scientist Arnim Zola (Toby Jones).
The acquisition of said Tesseract allows Howard Stark to create a suit of armor similar to the one his son would later make, and give it to Steve Rogers to allow him to fight even without a Super Soldier Serum. The episode follows a similar structure to the main story with even a similar scene of Steve’s noble sacrifice and return to the modern day to find the war over and the world changed.
This episode features many returning characters such as Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Its animation could certainly take some getting used to for some viewers, but the art style and direction is good with great looking shots. The action, while a little more cartoonish at times does have great choreography to it.
What If…? will have eighteen half-hour episodes in this season, focusing on many different What If scenarios featuring a wide array of different characters like Loki and T’Challa and returning actors like Michael Rooker and Chadwick Boseman in his final turn as the Black Panther. New episodes will come out every Wednesday on Disney+. The next two Marvel series for Disney+ will be Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye, debuting later this year.
