Review: ‘Ms. Marvel’ Off To A Slow Start, But The Show Is Full Of Potential [SPOILERS]
Ms. Marvel is adding her own flair to the superhero genre.
Disney+ has just released its newest series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, again focusing on a new hero, Ms. Marvel. Created by Bisha K. Ali, this series follows Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a young girl trying to express herself in a strict household.
Kamala is a huge fan of The Avengers, especially Captain Marvel, a.k.a Carol Danvers. She owns a YouTube channel where she discusses the past battles and exploits of The Avengers, and as the story begins her goal is to attend AvengersCon and participate in a Captain Marvel Cosplay Contest.
However, her family wants her to focus more on real world things, like her grades in school, or her recently failed driving test, saying she needs to stop indulging her fantasies, as her mother Muneeba Khan (Zenobia Shroff) puts it. When her father Yusuf Khan (Mohan Kapur) attempts to attend the Con with her to keep her out of “teenage trouble.” His plan to do so is the both of them cosplaying as The Hulk, something Kamala is very much opposed to.
To circumvent this, Kamala’s friend Bruno Carreli (Matt Lintz) helps her execute a plan to avoid her parents’ gaze in order to attend the con solo. He thinks that her Captain Marvel costume needs something to stand out, so he suggests adding something from her Pakistani culture as her own personal flair. Kamala finds a fancy bracelet in her attic and adds it to her costume. Little does she know that at this con, she would awaken powers of her own that quickly get out of control, causing chaos that she needs to save people from.
This first episode isn’t the most exciting or impressive, but it feels like a good start to this new character and her journey. Hopefully the remaining five of this season’s six episodes will pick up in pace from where this episode ended. With new powers to discover and new conflicts to face, you’ll want to watch Ms. Marvel each Wednesday on Disney+.
