Review: Netflix Brings Back Creative ‘Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure’ For Season Six Premiere [SPOILERS]
The Joestars have returned.
Netflix dropped a brand new season of the popular anime series, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Wednesday on their streaming platform. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a manga and anime series created by Hirohiko Araki, and it focuses on telling stories about the members of a familial bloodline known as the Joestars.
The series is divided into eight parts in the manga, six of which have been animated including the newly released Part Six which is titled Stone Ocean. Each part focuses on a different member of the Joestar Bloodline, with Stone Ocean focusing on Jolyne Cujoh, daughter of Jotaro Kujo, who was the main character of the third part, Stardust Crusaders.
Stone Ocean, like the rest of the series, is set in a world full of strange powers, mystical artifacts and weird creatures. The most popular type of power, a “Stand,” is described as the physical manifestation of the users’ fighting spirit. A Stand’s abilities are unique and personalized to their users.
The story of Stone Ocean is set in Green Dolphin Street Prison in Florida, after Jolyne is wrongfully blamed for a DUI committed by her then-boyfriend, she is forced to survive in this harsh prison environment. But as with the rest of the world, this is no ordinary harsh prison; this prison is full of other people that possess Stands and most of them are hostile towards Jolyne.
As a safety precaution in case she was ever in trouble, Jotaro entrusted Jolyne’s mother with the task of giving Jolyne an artifact, as he knew he would not always be there for her due to traveling for his job. This artifact is able to awaken the Stand inside someone, and when Jolyne’s awakens it takes the form of a humanoid made up of high density string which helps her evade danger and combat foes. She names her ability Stone Free.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is an incredibly wacky and stylized series, so its unique qualities will take some getting used to for new viewers. But after you adjust, you’ll find an entertaining series with great story and character writing, along with some especially creative and interesting abilities making it stand out, even among other anime.
David Productions, the studio behind the anime, does an excellent job bringing to life Araki’s already amazing art, and adds some great animation, music and sound design. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean has released its first twelve episodes and will be dropping more later in the season, so keep an eye on Netflix for more as this show has an unusual release cycle.
