Review: ‘Only Murders In The Building’ Returns With New Mysteries, New Characters, And Even Romance [SPOILERS]
“Second seasons are tough you know. But people keep dying, so I suppose there’s always a chance.”
To go for a second season or not…that is the question that kicks off the return of Only Murders in the Building, Hulu’s smash hit series. And the answer to this extremely meta question is yes, both in reference to the show itself, and the in-show podcast formed the framework for the plot of last season, and will again for this one.
At the end of season one, Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), Charles Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) solved the murder of Tim Kono, who was killed in The Arconia, their art deco apartment building in New York City. The trio turned their unauthorized investigation into a hit podcast, and as they celebrated both the capture of the murderer and the last episode, they found themselves in a world of trouble again after Mabel stumbled upon yet another murdered Arconian.
As the second season opens up, they find themselves persons of interest in the death of Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell), the acid-tongued president of the apartment’s HOA, who was one of their season one nemeses. Even worse, they themselves are now the subject of Cinda Canning’s (Tina Fey) new podcast, Only Murderers in the Building.
Though Mabel is initially not interested in doing another season of podcast (and of course, getting to the bottom of another mystery), Oliver and Charles win her over to the idea rather quickly.
Mabel: I need a life away from death. We should all just let ourselves be a little boring again.
Season 2, Episode 1: “Persons of Interest”
Oliver: I’d rather be dead than boring.
And they’re off! The mystery deepens, and widens, when a mysterious painting of Charles’ father (Ben Livingston), nearly naked and wrapped around a mystery woman, disappears from Bunny’s apartment and then reappears in Charles’ place. The show explores Charles’ childhood and the relationship with his estranged father, offering a deeper look into his back story.
New characters pop up in the first of two episodes now available on Hulu that may or may not be on the side of good. Shirley MacLaine is Leonora Folger, Bunny’s mother, and the owner of the mysterious painting. Cara Delevingne is Alice, a gallery owner who is interested in Mabel’s art, and in her romantically. And Amy Schumer plays herself, in this season’s famous-person-playing-themself-role. (Last year it was Sting.) Schumer tells Oliver she is interested in the streaming rights to OMITB, as if this show needs to swallow its own tail any more.
Charles: We’re really getting the hang of this.
Season 2, Episode 1: “Persons of Interest”
Oliver: “Absolutely. You can tell it’s our second season.”
The new season still sparkles with witty dialog, a compelling mystery and the endearing friendship of the trio, so if you loved it before, you will want to return to the Arconia and its delightful murders. Only Murders in the Building remains one of streaming’s most reliably entertaning shows.
