Review: ‘The Boys’ Season Three Has The Gore, Nudity And Violence You Love, Only Bigger [SPOILERS]
You won’t be able to look away.
The newest and third season of The Boys, Amazon Prime Video’s superhero series based on the comic book of the same name, was released recently. Created by Eric Kripke, this series focuses on a world where superheroes are created and managed by businesses, and are focused on garnering optimal public opinion rather than being true superheroes. The primary business, known as Vought, manages the most popular superhero team, The Seven, and covers up all their crimes and dirty secrets to maintain appearances.
In this season, taking place a year after the end of season two, The World’s favorite superhero Homelander (Anthony Starr), is struggling with his public image after he had an unfortunate relationship with a fellow hero who was revealed as a white supremacist.
He also gets tested as the leader of The Seven when his boss, head of Vought Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito), makes fellow member of The Seven, Starlight (Erin Moriarty), co-captain of The Seven. Starlight tries to make the best of this opportunity to expose and defeat Homelander for all the evil he has done in the past.
Meanwhile, on the less super side of things is the gang of normal humans, who have all been wronged by Supers in some way. Led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), a man who Homelander personally wronged, and Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), a man who hates A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), the fastest man alive, for accidentally killing his love and sweeping it under the rug.
This team previously tried to get revenge on Supers by killing them, but now are attempting to form a business around non-lethally bringing them to justice. They also are trying to track down and unravel the mystery of a believed-to-be dead Super known as Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) who makes his debut this season.
This season’s first three episodes that dropped last week were great, and very well-directed even compared to previous seasons. The cast has remained just as fun and entertaining as before, with great interpersonal dynamics and performances.
The Boys‘ signature nudity, violence and gore are present here as well, even bigger than before. Fair warning: there are numerous scenes featuring these qualities, including a detailed and graphic nude scene involving a Super who can shrink themselves down.
The Boys Season Three will have eight episodes this season, premiering on Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
