Romy and Michele are back, just in time for their 30th reunion!
20th Century Studios posted a picture on Monday of Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow (shot from behind their director’s chairs) on the set of the sequel to 1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. The caption read “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”
No plot details for the sequel have been disclosed, nor does it have an official title or release date. However, 2027 will mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the movie that started it all. Romy and Michele 2 will be released directly to streaming on Disney + and Hulu.
In the original film, directed by David Mirkin, Romy (Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow) played a couple of high school under-performers who also didn’t make much of themselves after graduating. When it came time to go to their 10-year high school reunion, rather than just skip it, they decided to go and make up an elaborate lie about their post-grad success (famously claiming they invented the Post-It note) to impress everyone, particularly the bullies who made their school careers miserable. They get caught lying, of course, but find even greater success in being themselves. Aww.
Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Julia Campbell, Vincent Ventresca and Camryn Manheim also starred in Romy and Michele, which was directed by David Mirkin and written by Robin Schiff, based on characters from her play Ladies Room.
Schiff wrote the sequel as well, which will be produced and directed by Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series).
Cumming, Garafalo, Campbell and Manheim are all set to return, as is costume designer Mona May, who crafted Romy and Michele’s iconic wardrobe, a key feature in the plot of the orginal. New cast members include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham in roles that have yet to be disclosed.
“I’m so excited to be a part of this amazing project to keep the DNA of the characters and design the fashions to be as fun and fabulous as the original film,” May said in a statement. “Romy and Michele are forever fashionistas, and I’m so excited to be working with Lisa and Mira again.”
