’90s Kids Rejoice! ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ Reboot is Back On, But This Time for Adults
The mighty Head of Olmec will return, but to The CW, not Quibi.
The CW has announced it has ordered a revival of Legends of the Hidden Temple, after it was originally announced to premiere on now-scrapped streaming service Quibi. The reboot of the Nickelodeon game show will keep the original ancient ruins theme including the Mayan Olmec head, Moat Crossings, Steps of Knowledge, and Temple Run.
The reboot will also keep all the classic and vibrant team names like Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes, and Green Monkeys.
In the new iteration, the show ventures out of the safety of a studio setting into a what purports to be a mysterious jungle, with tougher challenges and bigger prizes. The five colorful teams begin the journey, but only one is “strong enough and smart enough” to enter the ominous Olmec’s Temple, avoid the Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure and return it to its rightful owner, thus earning the cash prize.
The original series aired on Nickelodeon from 1993-1995 and was inspired by Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda video game with a dash of Indiana Jones movie heroism thrown in. The rebooted version is described as a supersized and reimagined adult version. These participants are no longer kids, but adults who probably watched the show back when they were youngsters.
The series order is part of a move by The CW to increase the original non-scripted programming in its lineup. It is also adding US adaptations of British shows like Would I Lie To You? and Killer Camp.
