What do a dissolute lawyer, a penguin in underpants and a frazzled cat have in common? They are the newest stars of a Fox animated series based on the 80s comic strip Bloom County.

Fox is developing a comedy using the characters of Steve Dallas, Bill the Cat, Opus the Penguin (and more) from cartoonist Berkeley Breathed’s strip for its animated lineup. Bloom County originally ran from 1980 to 1989 and was revived in 2015. The strip spawned several best-selling books and was known for examining events in politics and culture from the viewpoint of the residents of an idyllic small town somewhere in Middle America.

Breathed will be involved in the show, co-writing and executive producing the project, which comes from Fox Entertainment, its animation studio Bento Box Entertainment, Miramax, Spyglass Media Group and Project X Entertainment.

Bloom County first appeared in The Daily Texan, a student newspaper, before becoming nationally syndicated in the Washington Post.

About resurrecting his characters in the current socio-political climate, Breathed said, “At the end of Alien, we watched cuddly Sigourney Weaver go down for a long peaceful snooze in cryogenic hyper-sleep after getting chased around by a saliva-spewing maniac, only to be wakened decades later into a world stuffed with far worse. Fox and I have done the identical thing to Opus and the rest of the Bloom County gang, may they forgive us.”

“I was introduced to the brilliance of Berkeley Breathed and Bloom County as a teenager,” Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn added. “His signature blend of satire, politics and sentiment hooked me. Plus, I love Opus. Today, Berkeley’s smart and hilarious take on American culture is more relevant than ever. And, together with Bento Box, we’re thrilled to bring his unique ensemble of characters and social commentary to broadcast television.”

No casting details or plot points have yet been released for the project.
