Adult Swim Reveals ‘Rick and Morty’ In Human Form in New Trailer Featuring Christopher Lloyd
Of course, the Back to the Future feel is intentional. The meaning behind of Adult Swim’s new teaser clip is less clear.
Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s successful adult cartoon Rick and Morty has always been a riff on Back to the Future, where alcoholic and misanthropic Rick is a dark, nihilistic take on Doc Brown and Morty is a more depressed Marty. And although the show is much more than a direct parody, there always that idea at the core, an old man and his young ward traversing time, space and dimensions to go on adventures.
Adult Swim just made the connection a bit more real by releasing what looks like an episode clip featuring Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, and Jaeden Martell (Knives Out, It), jumping out of an animated portal into a real-life garage.
Posted to Adult Swim’s account Friday, the video is only 14 seconds long. Lloyd is Rick Sanchez and Martell is Morty Smith and the Adult Swim’s tweet accompanying the footage says only “C-132,” which is a reference to one of the Earth alternatives in the show’s multiverse. C-132 is featured in the first two volumes of the Rick and Morty comic book from Oni Press.
In the clip, we see Rick hop out of a portal and into his garage alongside Morty. Lloyd then croaks out his take on Han Solo’s famous line from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, “Morty, we’re home” – complete with a familiar belch.
Adult Swim hasn’t commented on whether this is a clip from a special, a short film, or just part of a regular episode, which wouldn’t be out of place in a show with a multiverse featuring an infinite number of Ricks and Mortys.
Rick and Morty’s next episode is the two-part Season 5 finale that airs Sunday on Adult Swim.
