Too soon? Maybe, but it’s a question that will have to be answered with some haste: who will replace Alex Trebek on Jeopardy? The beloved host with the acerbic wit passed away on from pancreatic cancer on November 8th, taped enough episodes for only part of this season, so to keep the show going, a new host will be needed.

Trebek’s last episode will air on Christmas Day, and only finished taping two weeks before he died at age 80. Trebek had hosted Jeopardy since 1984.

Now everyone’s thoughts are moving to who is a worthy heir to Trebek’s podium, and there are some high-profile names being suggested.

There’s a petition at change.org, currently with over 43,000 signatures, asking Sony Entertainment to make LeVar Burton the new host. Burton, who played Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: the Next Generation and who hosted the PBS educational show Reading Rainbow for years, isn’t ready to talk about that so soon after Trebek’s death, according to his Twitter feed, though he is quite flattered by the attention.

Another somewhat obvious choice is probably the only man to have spent nearly as much time as Trebek spent in the Jeopardy studio: Ken Jennings. Jennings, 46, is the contestant with the longest winning streak and earlier this year returned to win the Jeopardy: Greatest of All Time competition, taking home a cool million.

Jennings has capitalized on his fame as a game-show smarty-pants, authoring books and creating a massive social media presence. And he’s still in the Jeopardy family, as he signed on as a producer this season and has presented categories in pre-taped segments, which some take as a signal that he was in line for the position.

Another experienced host-type person who would be ready to take over is Emmy-winner Tom Bergeron. In addition to hosting America’s Funniest Home Videos from 2001 to 2015, he also presided over Dancing With the Stars from 2005 to 2020. He has game show experience from his time hosting Hollywood Squares and is the sort of distinguished presence that made Trebek so popular.

Other names that have been bandied about include George Stephanopoulos, Anderson Cooper, Laura Coates, Neil deGrasse Tyson and even Betty White, though the latter is probably the least likely.
