‘Animaniacs’ Resurrection: If Anyone Can Save 2020, It’s Yakko, Wakko and Dot
Finally, a reboot we can get behind.
Not just because it’s the irreverant misfit cartoon trio we worshiped in the 1990s, but because they are (dare we say it) better. They are zany, totally insany, and sharper than ever as they skewer everything you hate to love about 2020.
Just in case you don’t remember it from your childhood, Animaniacs was a WB Network afternoon animation staple from 1993 to ’98, executive produced by none other than Stephen Spielberg, who returns for this new iteration as well.
The show featured the Warner siblings (Yakko, Wakko and Dot) who lived in the water tower on the Warner Bros. studio lot and escaped to wreak mayhem wherever they went. On the plus side, they did teach us to remember all the countries of the world, just to balance it all out.
Taking on everyone from pop culture icons to the bureaucrats at Warner, and along with their friends like Pinky and the Brain (who later got their own spinoff), Animaniacs was the show ideal for kids and their parents. There were enough silly gags to crack up the kiddos and sly, winking asides for mom and dad to make it a show for all ages.
In the trailer (top of page) it’s evident that the edgy humor is still there, though we’re not sure it’s entirely kid-friendly. The thirteen-episode season, which premieres on Hulu on November 20th, pokes fun at catfishing, mansplaining, My Little Pony, Donald Trump and reboots, if only to be really, really meta.
Episode synopses promise memes, dragons, pimples, Russian pirates, time-travel and mouth-dwelling gnomes. We. Can’t. Wait. How about you?
