The Doctor is back, and he’s flush with Disney cash!

The new season of Doctor Who is a co-production between the BBC, which has aired the show since its 1962 premiere, and Disney +, which will stream the show everywhere but the United Kingdom and Ireland. That means that the show famous for its homemade props and slapped-together monsters (back in the ’60s and ’70s) will now have a budget closer to that of a Marvel movie than the BBC’s few pounds and pence.

That means that when the 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and his companion Ruby Sunday, played by Milli Gibson, face off against dinosaurs (as they do in the trailer), they look like genuine CGI dinosaurs and not puppets or models.

Gatwa, who should be familiar to American audiences as one of the Kens in the Barbie movie, will pilot the TARDIS though time and space, ending up in times and places as varied as a Bridgerton-style Regency Court (with aliens cosplaying as humans!), pre-historic Earth, the groovy 1960s, or the end of the world as we know it. Gatwa’s Doctor was introduced in the show’s annual Christmas special, where he took the time-traveling baton from David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor and the 14th regeneration of himself.

Gibson’s companion character Ruby was also introduced last year, and will join the Doctor on his adventures this season, while also trying to find her birth parents. Russell T. Davies, who rebooted the seriesand who served as showrunner from 2005-2010, returned for last year’s specials featuring Tennant and Gatwa.

Other actors appearing this season are Indira Varma as new recurring character the Duchess, and Callie Clark, Anita Dobson, Yasmin Finney, Michelle Greenidge, Bonnie Langford, Jinkx Monsoon, Jemma Redgrave, Lenny Rush and Angela Wynter.
