Metropolis – the one with the woman (and not the man) of steel – is getting the small screen treatment on AppleTV+.

Sam Esmail, who created the dystopian crime drama Mr. Robot for the USA Network is behind the adaptation of director Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 film. He will be the showrunner and will direct episodes of the limited series.

Metropolis has not been the subject of any remakes or revivals to date. Lang, who directed such classics as M and Contempt wrote the screenplay of the silent German expressionist film debuted in 1927, starring Gustav Fröhlich and Brigitte Helm. The film was co-written by Thea von Harbou, who penned the novel of the same name two years prior. The groundbreaking film is known for its messages on classism in society, and it is also one of the first science-fiction movies.

The novel and the film follow two star-crossed lovers named Freder and Maria, whose romance eventually leads to a class uprising when they discover a toiling underground lower class and lead them in a revolt against the pampered upper class, themes that seem especially relevant today.

Esmail has been developing the movie for the small screen since 2016, but the copyright to the original work won’t expire until December of this year. He is also working on the Peacock series Angelyne, Gaslit, starring Julia Roberts, for Starz, and the new Battlestar Galactica reboot, also for Peacock, among other projects.
