As Allegations Against Joss Whedon Pile Up, Will Anything Be Done?
It’s getting harder to look the other way.
On Wednesday, actress Charisma Carpenter alleged toxic environment on the set of the WB Network show Angel, and specifically called out show-runner Joss Whedon as the perpetrator. Carpenter also starred as Cordelia on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the show that launched Angel.
Carpenter’s statement publicly accused Whedon of retaliating against her when she became pregnant. She said he asked her in a closed-door meeting if she was “‘going to keep it’ … and proceeded to attack my character, mock my religious beliefs, accuse me of sabotaging the show, and then unceremoniously fired me the following season once I gave birth.” When Carpenter was six months pregnant, she said Whedon called her at 1am, asking her to work, despite her doctor’s recommendation that she shorten her work hours. “I felt powerless and alone,” Carpenter wrote. “With no other option, I swallowed the mistreatment and carried on.”
Charisma was writing in support of actor Ray Fisher, who is not longer a part of the cast of The Flash movie after alleging that Warner execs enabled Whedon’s abusive behavior. His character Cyborg is not appearing the film at all.
Several of Carpenter’s Buffyverse co-stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg, have backed Carpenter, with Trachtenberg notably saying that Whedon was not allowed to be alone on the Buffy set with her. Trachtenberg was cast on the show at age 14 and stayed until she was 17.
The only male cast member to say anything about Carpenter’s complaint was Anthony Stewart Head, who played Buffy’s mentor Giles on the show. While Head himself didn’t see any abusive behavior, but he said during an interview with ITV This Morning that “this is not a man saying, ‘I didn’t see it so it didn’t happen.’ ” He continued, “I am gutted. I’m seriously gutted because one of my memories — my fondest memory — was the fact that it was so empowering. Not just with the words in the script, but the family feel of the show.”
Fisher alleged that Whedon’s behavior on the set of 2017’s Justice League was “gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable.”
According to Variety, “WarnerMedia’s investigation into the Justice League movie has concluded and remedial action has been taken.” No specifics of that remedial action were given. This comes amid Fisher continuing to speak out on the issue, with the actor saying that his career has been threatened because of his stance.
In addition, Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole wrote an essay in 2017 that called him out, saying he had a long history of portraying himself as a feminist while hiding affairs with coworkers.
But that action, if true, could be the only consequence Whedon faces for his alleged behavior. None of the other male stars of Whedon productions have come forward with statements, and he is still working on various productions currently. HBO Max is in the process of removing his name from their upcoming series The Nevers, but it is still his production.
No news outlet was able to reach Whedon for a comment, and no studio execs have made statements about Carpenter’s allegations yet.
