Back in Boston: ‘Frasier’ Crosses the Country To Revisit His ‘Cheers’ Stomping Grounds in Paramount+ Series Reboot
What fresh start is this?
Frasier, in his own words, has reentered the building. The Paramount+ reboot of the venerable sitcom is scheduled to premiere on the streamer on October 12th, and Kelsey Grammer’s character is back in his old stomping grounds: the show is set in Boston, not Seattle.
Back in the place where everybody knows your name, Frasier is now living with his grown son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), a firefighter. Frasier is also embarking on a new chapter of his life back Boston, facing new challenges, forging new relationships (and maintaining old ones as well.)
New to the planned 10-episode series are Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy-turned-university professor Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.
Fans of the original sitcom, which ran for 11 seasons on NBC from 1993 to 2004, will cheer the return of Bebe Neuwirth, who will reprise the role of Lilith, Frasier’s ex-wife and Freddy’s mom, a role she originated on the hit NBC series Cheers from which Frasier was spawned. Peri Gilpin, who played producer Roz in the original Frasier, is also returning.
The first two episodes of the new series, which both drop on the show’s premiere date, are directed by director and television creator James Burrows, best known for his work as co-creator, executive producer and director of Cheers, as well as Frasier, Will & Grace and Dear John. The show is written by Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, who executive produce with Kelsey Grammer, Tom Russo and Jordan McMahon.
After the first two shows debut, the show will drop on a weekly basis. Grammer recorded a new version of the iconic theme song, which is posted at the top of this article.
