Back in the ‘Box’: Netflix Expands The World Of ‘Bird Box’ With New Movie Set In Barcelona
Blindfold yourself if you want to live.
Netflix dropped a trailer for Bird Box Barcelona on Monday, revisiting the world created in the 2018 Sandra Bullock movie Bird Box. The new film will be released on July 14th.
The Spanish-set movie is more spinoff than sequel, and follows Sebastian, played by Mario Casas, as he tries to protect his daughter from the killer entities that will take out anyone not blindfolded. Casas is joined in this film by Georgina Campbell, who was the breakout star of last year’s Barbarian. The pair look, if you’ll pardon the pun, for a way to save themselves and Sebastian’s daughter as they blindly fumble their way through the desolate streets of Barcelona.
The original movie was a post-apocalyptic thriller directed by Susanne Bier and adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel. Bullock played a mother who has to fight for her life and those of her children as they obscured their vision in order to protect themselves from an unseen killer that attacked anyone with their eyes open. The new film operates under the same premise.
People running through town are warned to “wear blindfolds. Any means necessary to cover your eyes, and avoid visual contact with these beings,” because anyone who looks at the evil force will be compelled to violently kill themselves. Sebastian must form uneasy alliances with other survivors to escape an unexpected and even more sinister threat that expands the Bird Box universe.
The film was written and directed by Álex Pastor and David Pastor and also stars Alejandra Howard (The Wasteland), Naila Schuberth (Blackout), Diego Calva (Babylon), Patrick Criado (Money Heist), Lola Dueñas (The Sea Inside), Gonzalo De Castro (The Perfect Family), Michelle Jenner (The Girls at the Back), and Leonardo Sbaraglia (Pain and Glory).
