New millennium, new heroes – or at least, a new look for old heroes.

On Tuesday, DC and Warner Bros. Animation, along with HBO Max and Cartoon Network, announced two brand-new series based on Batman and Superman. Fans will be excited to learn that both of the new shows for the Caped Crusader and Man of Steel have great pedigrees

The first, Batman: The Caped Crusader is an all-new animated series that re-imagines the Batman mythology. This series comes from executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams (various iterations of Star Wars and Star Trek) and Matt Reeves (The Batman) and is jointly produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions, and 6th & Idaho.

The series has received a straight-to-series order from HBO Max and Cartoon Network, so it’s definitely a go, and will probably be available on both platforms.

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” said Abrams and Reeves in a statement about Batman: The Caped Crusader. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

While the Abrams’ and Reeves’ involvement is of course, big news, fans might be more invested in the fact that Timm is on board. Timm helped establish the incredibly successful DC Animated Universe and was a guiding force behind Batman: The Animated Series. Timm also produced Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond.

The show doesn’t look to be for kids or teens (think the violent, profane and gruesome style of DC’s recently-released Harley Quinn series.) It is said to feature “sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”

Fans of early Batman comics will notice Bob Kane’s long-eared design and the angular animations of the DC Animated Universe in the released poster art. The series is reported to feature “state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies.”

After the announcement of the new Batman animated series, there was even more DC animated news: a new Superman animated series has received a two-season order with The Boys’ Jack Quaid fronting the project.

In My Adventures with Superman, we follow the adventures of Superman and Lois Lane (Alice Lee, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.) The series focuses on Clark Kent (also Quaid) and Lois as twenty-somethings as they work together as an investigative reporting team at the Daily Planet. They’ll be joined by their best friend Jimmy Olsen and we’ll see Clark balancing his dual identities as Superman and Clark Kent along with his blossoming relationship with Lois.

Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, said in a statement, “It’s been a great partnership working with Cartoon Network and HBO Max to bring more DC Super Heroes to the platform in new and creatively interesting ways. This is the first animated Superman series in many years and we want to tell our Superman story through the trio of Clark, Lois and Jimmy – whose relationship dynamic will allow for rich, serialized and engaging stories as we explore their lives as individuals and their journey together as friends.”

Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) will executive produce, and Jake Wyatt (Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus) and Brendan Clogher (Voltron: Legendary Defender) will serve as co-executive producers. Josie Campbell (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) serves as co-producer. Looking at the art released accompanying the announcement, the show seems to have an anime flair.

Warner Bros.’ Amy Friedman said in a statement “This fresh take delivers a modern, relatable Clark Kent alongside a fearless, whip-smart Lois Lane. Both are navigating the small tasks of both becoming adults and trying to save the world.”

My Adventures With Superman marks the first animated series for the character since 2005’s Justice League Unlimited, though there have been several direct-to-DVD films featuring Superman. Though neither series has an official release date, it could be as soon as 2022.
