No one shoots like Gaston – which is good since he is now starring in his own Disney series.

Disney has expanded its catalog of protagonists to include baddies like Maleficent and Cruella, so it was only a matter of time before one of the House of Mouse’s more theatrical villains got a chance to tell his story. Gaston (and his sidekick Lefou) will headline the eight-episode limited musical series to be called, oddly enough, Beauty and the Beast.

The live-action series stars Luke Evans and Josh Gad, who will reprise the roles of Gaston and LeFou respectively from the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast film. In addition, newcomer Briana Middleton (The Tender Bar) will join the show as Tilly, Louie’s stepsister. The prequel series was first announced as being in development in March 2020; back then it was slated to be called Little Town.

According to Disney, the series will be set in the iconic kingdom of Beauty and the Beast years before the Beast and Belle’s romance, and will follow Gaston and LeFou as they set off with LeFou’s step-sister, Tilly, after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light. This sends the trio off on an unexpected journey where past mysteries are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, and old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Branded Television.

The show will include original music from Beauty and the Beast composer Alan Menken and Tony Award-nominated director Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed), will serve as an executive producer and will direct the first episode. Gad, Edward Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz (Once Upon a Time) — who together developed an unaired Muppets musical series for Disney Plus — are writing the series.

“There are few more precious gems in the Disney library than this iconic franchise, and this prequel is both a love letter to what’s come before and its own spectacular adventure,” said Jonnie Davis, president of ABC Signature. “Josh, Eddy and Adam’s vision gives us a window into the origin of Luke’s Gaston and Josh’s LeFou with the twist of a new partner in crime—Tilly, played by the luminous Briana Middleton.”

There are no other casting announcements, and no word on whether the new show, schedule to air on Disney+, will delve into the “LeFou is gay” controversy. Production is scheduled to begin in spring of 2022.
