‘Beavis and Butthead’ Among the First to Climb the “Mountain of Comedy” on New Streamer
Heh heh…you said “streamer.”
Beavis and Butthead are back! MTV music videos may be a long-forgotten relic of the past, but that’s no reason to miss out on the collected wisdom of the two animated slackers.
The gruesome twosome have been added to the lineup of Paramount+, a new streaming service that is as a rebranding of CBS All Access, merging with new content from Viacom, which includes MTV and Comedy Central programming. The service premieres on March 4th
This isn’t their first cinematic offering; Beavis and Butt-head Do America hit theaters back in 1996 during the original series’ MTV run. Mike Judge is the show’s executive producer, creator and he provides the voice over for both iconic characters.
Reviving Beavis and Butthead is only one of the new programs announced recently. Workaholics is getting a made-for-streaming movie starring Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck.
The wacky cops of Reno 911! are returning (from the doomed streaming service Quibi) with a super-sized event special called Reno 911! The Hunt for QAnon.
Trevor Noah will be on-screen both weekly and daily. The Weekly Show with Trevor Noah will see The Daily Show host star in and produce a six-episode run looking at stories across the societal landscape and talking with the people behind the headlines.
The comedy slate was announced during a ViacomCBS launch event for Paramount+ given by Chris McCarthy, president of MTV Entertainment Group.
Other announcements included a confirmation that Kelsey Grammer is returning for his third go as Frasier Crane.
The show, which ended 17 years ago, starred Grammeras the title character and was a ratings success during its 11-year run. It will be a flagship offering on Paramount+.
“Frasier‘s back — and he’s more exactly the same than ever,” ViacomCBS said in a statement Wednesday. “Kelsey Grammer reprises his role as the Dr. Frasier Crane.” Grammer also played the character on the long-running sitcom Cheers.
The network said it was bringing back “one of the most highly acclaimed, most successful comedy series of all time.””The revival will have everything you love about the original: coziness, great writing, and of course, a cast led by Kelsey Grammer,” the streaming service said. No date was given for the revival.
There was no word on whether David Hyde-Pierce as Niles or Jane Leeves as Daphne (or any of the rest of the cast) would be part of the new iteration of the show.
Also, The Game is switching their playing field again. A revival of the hour-long dramedy got the green light from the streamer. Coby Bell is set to reprise his role as Jason Pitts along with Brandy who plays Pitt’s aptly-named ex-wife Chardonnay. It had previously been scheduled to go back to The CW.
Other shows confirmed included a new season of Inside Amy Schumer, MTV’s Unplugged, The Real World, Rugrats, iCarly, a new SpongeBob SquarePants movie, anthology crime series American Tragedy and dark comedy Guilty Party. The network will also be home to films, including the sequel to A Quiet Place and the seventh Mission Impossible installment will come to the service after their theatrical run.
