‘Carrie’ On: Mike Flanagan Horror Series Based on Stephen King’s Novel Goes to the After-Prom on Prime

There is life after high school, even if your prom experience was less than ideal. And even if you were drenched in pig’s blood before the final dance before the school burnt to the ground.
Carrie, the Mike Flanagan series based on the 1974 Stephen King novel of the same name, got a second season renewal from Amazon Prime. Unlike the 1976 film of the same name directed by Brian DePalma, the second season will show us what happens after Carrie wreaked revenge on those who wronged her.
It’s no wonder that Prime was willing to make the leap into uncharted territory with Carrie; the show floated to the top of the Nielsen streaming charts, becoming overall streaming title with 1.26 billion minutes viewed in five days. Adults 18-49 represented 58% of viewing in the report for the week of Oct. 5-11.
Flanagan’s series, which premiered earlier this month, starred Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a teenage girl who has spent her life in seclusion who then started high school following her father’s death. She discovers she has mysterious telekinetic powers, but those don’t win her many friends among the vicious high school cliques, resulting in the famous season finale alluded to in the first paragraph of this article.
Carrie also starred Samantha Sloyan as Carrie’s mother, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, and Thalia Dudek as students, and Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard as faculty at the doomed high school. Also appearing were Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Michael Trucco, Katee Sackhoff, Tim Bagley, Heather Graham and Tahmoh Penikett, among others. (No spoilers here about which, if any, of these characters are eligible to appear in the second season.)
Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether…with particular strength among female viewers,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios in a statement. “It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”
Mike Flanagan is staying on as showrunner and executive producer, and Stephen King will continue as EP as well. In that statement he said, ““For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” said Flanagan.”
No timeline for production on season 2 of Carrie has been announced yet.
