Celebrate Halfway to Halloween with Muppets Haunted Mansion Announcement
The calendar may say summer is nearly here, but some of us can’t help but look forward to the Spooky Season. Luckily, the Muppets and Disney+ are ready for us.
The Muppets’ first-ever Halloween special, Muppets Haunted Mansion will feature the your favorite Muppets, celebrity cameos and new music and spooky amusement for all. Muppets Haunted Mansion will take place on Halloween night, when Gonzo is challenged to spend one night in the night in The Haunted Mansion. It is slated to air this fall.
This will be the Muppets’ first stay at The Haunted Mansion, but the iconic Disneyland ride starred on the big screen before, namely in the eponymous 2003 Eddie Murphy film, directed by Rob Minkoff. Deadline reports that 18 years after the family adventure film debuted, Dear White People director Justin Simien will lens another movie based on the 51-year-old theme park ride. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce with Nick Reynolds of Rideback executive producing. Katie Dippold will pen the script.
Disney acquired the Muppets intellectual properties rights in 2004 and has gradually augmented its Muppet library on Disney+. The complete archive of the original The Muppet Show from the 1970s, including the previously-unreleased later seasons, are all on the streaming platform.
Last summer, a short-form unscripted series starring the Muppets and a slew of famous guest stars debuted on Disney+; Muppets Now was the latest entry in the franchise prior to the Halloween announcement. Other recent entries include The Muppets movie from 2012 and its sequel Muppets Most Wanted. Short-lived The Muppets ABC series was canceled after only one season back in 2016.
