Deploy All Monsters: Apple TV+ Renews ‘Monarch’ and Promises Multiple Monsterverse Spinoffs
Monster Island will be welcoming some new guests soon.
Apple TV announced Thursday that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will return for a second season, and that Apple had struck a deal with Legendary Entertainment to develop ” multiple spinoff series based on the franchise.”
No details were released, so we don’t know which kaiju will headline their own series for Apple.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set in the same universe as Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is in theaters now. Monarch‘s first season followed two timelines. In the “present” day (2015), we followed young Cate, played by Shōgun‘s Anna Sawai, a survivor of Godzilla’s San Francisco rampage.
Anna traces her own family connections to the monster rampages with her half-brother Kentaro (Ren Watabe) and discovers Colonel Lee Shaw, played by Kurt Russell in the 2015 timeline and Russell’s son Wyatt in the 1950s, who with Cate and Kentaro’s father was caught up with an organization called Monarch.
“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has left an indelible imprint on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world, led by the brilliance of Chris (Black), Matt (Fraction), Kurt, Wyatt and the incredibly gifted talented cast and creative team,” said Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV+.
He continued, “we couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise, as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse.”
