Don’t Touch that Dial! Ryan Reynolds and Jimmy Kimmel Make 80s TV Commercials Cool Again
In the 80s, you had no choice but to watch the commercials while you sat in front of the TV. For Tuesday’s retro homage Live in Front of a Studio Audience, the commercials were unskippable, but for a different reason.
Viewers tuning in to ABC’s live rendition of two beloved 80s-era sitcoms, Diff’rent Strokes and Facts of Life, saw stars like Kevin Hart, Jennifer Aniston and more recreate those TV comedies. And they also got an extra 80’s surprise: satirical and nostalgic ads from brands like Heinz, Jack in the Box and Aviation Gin, spoofing classic campaigns from the era.
The parody ads were created by Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production company along with Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot, which also produced Live in Front of a Studio Audience. The six spots featured 80’s brands (for the most part) and starred icons from the decade like Alfonso Ribeiro, Jennifer Beals, Bob Vila and David Leisure.
The original ads for Jack in the Box, Kool-Aid, Heinz, Kraft Singles, and Oscar Mayer, along with Reynolds’ Aviation Gin brand (no, it hasn’t been around since the 80s) jokingly extended the 80s homage.
Alfonso Ribeiro appeared in an ad for Oscar Mayer hot dogs that on Brooke Shields’ infamous Calvin Klein jeans ad that claimed that nothing came between her and her Calvins. Ribeiro and Home improvement guru Bob Vila (This Old House) starred in an ad featuring the wall-destroying Kool-Aid Man.
Ribeiro voiced a spoof of the ubiquitous “This is your brain on drugs” PSA, but this time the frying pan is cooking up a grilled cheese sandwich.
Jennifer Beals of Flashdance fame sports Jack in the Box “shoulder patties” – a play on those enormous padded power suits women used to wear, and Ribeiro returns for a Days of Our Lives-themed ad for Heinz Ketchup, called “The Wait of the World.” And finally, Reynolds himself voices an commercial for his own Aviator Gin brand that mocks former President Reagan’s “Morning in America” campaign ad.
In addition to the listed stars, two of the original MTV VJs, Nina Blackwood and Alan Hunter provided voice-overs, as did Reynolds’ wife Blake’s sister, Teen Witch star Robyn Lively. All ads are compiled in the linked video above.
The actor founded Maximum Effort as a multimedia company and it has produced a steady stable of content, often with Reynolds’ sharp wit and biting humor. His ads for Mint Mobile and Match.com have proven to be viral sensations.
