Emotional Support Robot: In ‘Sunny’, Rashida Jones and Her Bot Solve a Tragic Mystery in New Apple TV+ Series
Is there nothing robots can’t do?
In the Apple TV+ series Sunny, one clever robot helps Suzie (Rashida Jones) solve the mystery of her husband and son’s mysterious disappearance (and maybe death). The robot, called Sunny, is the creation of her late husband, and the connection between the two leads Suzie to her husband’s employers, who are not the ordinary electronics firm they seem to be.
Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, gets devastating news: her husband and son disappeared in a plane crash. As she wallows in her grief, her husband’s former employers give her a cheerful bot called Sunny.
Though Suzie and Sunny don’t get off to a promising start when they meet in the trailer, according to the official synopsis, they “develop an unexpected friendship” before the two “uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.”
Heavy stuff.
The ten-part series also stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, You, Annie the Clumsy, and Jun Kunimura. The series was created by Katie Robbins, who serves as showrunner.
Sunny premieres on AppleTV+ on July 10th.
