Fight the Darkness: Netflix Promotes Adaptation of Pulitzer-Winner ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Starring Mark Ruffalo
Netflix’s new miniseries pits light vs. darkness, good vs. evil, and everyone vs. the Nazis.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning 2014 novel by Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot See tells the story of Marie-Laure Leblanc (Aria Mia Loberti), a blind French girl taking refuge with her father (Mark Ruffalo) and reclusive uncle (Hugh Laurie) in St. Malo, France, while hiding a legendary diamond that the Nazis will do anything to possess.
The story also follows Werner (Louis Hofmann), a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime because of his expertise in radio repair. Together they share a secret connection that will become a beacon of light that leads them through the harrowing backdrop of World War II.
In the trailer, Marie-Laure uses her uncle’s radio broadcasting equipment to speak to her fellow allies. “Ladies and gentlemen, before I begin my broadcast today, I have something to say,” she says. “In this time of darkness, of fading cities, I’m trying to remember: Light lasts forever; darkness lasts not even for one second when you turn on the light.”
“I know that broadcasting can get me executed,” she continues, before the attic she’s broadcasting from explodes, “but I will not be silenced.”
Netflix has turned the novel into a limited-series consisting of four episodes. The series is directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and written by Steven Knight (See). Both Levy and Knight serve as executive producers as well. The cast also includes Lars Eidinger and Marion Bailey.
The series debuts on November 2nd.
