Mike Flanagan’s final project for Netflix, a Poe-inspired limited series, will debut on the service just before Halloween.

The Fall of the House of Usher, an eight-episode limited series, follows ruthless siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), who have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth, per Netflix’s official description.

As in his previous series, Flanagan invited back some of his favorite actors. Fans of shows like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Midnight Club will see a mix of familiar and new faces in Usher, including Carla Gugino, Carl Lumbly, Mark Hamill, Michael Trucco, T’Nia Miller, Paola Nuñez, Henry Thomas, Kyleigh Curran, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Zach Gilford, Willa Fitzgerald, Katie Parker, Malcolm Goodwin, Crystal Balint, Aya Furukawa, Daniel Jun, Matt Biedel, Ruth Codd, Annabeth Gish, Igby Rigney and Robert Longstreet.

In an interview with Gugino on Tudum.com, conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike commenced, the star praised the series. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino said. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.”

In the series, Gugino portrays a demonic shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a famous Poe character whose identity is easily deduced by looking at the show’s poster art. “There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she said, adding, “you could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma.”

Flanagan directed four of the episodes, with Michael Fimognari handling the remainder. Flanagan wrote the series, based on several works by Edgar Allan Poe, with Dani Parker and Justina Ireland. Executive producers include Flanagan and Trevor Macy through their Intrepid Pictures banner, as well as Fimognari and Emmy Grinwis.

Last December, it was announced that Flanagan signed an exclusive new overall deal with Amazon, alongside his creative partner Macy, so all shows they create going forward will be exclusive to Prime Video. Shortly after this announcement, Netflix cancelled a planned second season of Flanagan’s hit The Midnight Club.

The show will be available to Netflix subscribers beginning October 12th.
