It all starts with the death of Batman.

In the first trailer for Gotham Knights, coming to The CW in 2023, Batman’s rebellious (in that signature CW way) adopted son, Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan), must come to grips not only with the death of his crime-fighter father, but of being accused of his murder.

Suspicion has fallen not only on Turner but on other teen villain wannabes like Duela Dent, aka The Joker’s daughter (Olivia Rose Keegan), Harper Row (Fallon Smythe), and her brother Cullen Row (Tyler DiChiara), who are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. After the rogue four escape custody and turn into fugitives, they are helped by Carrie Kelley (Navia Robinson), whose character is Robin in The Dark Knight Returns graphic novels.

The character of Hayes, invented for the show, is yet another son figure in Batman lore, which includes characters like Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Jason Todd and Damian Wayne.

Supernatural’s Misha Collins stars as the adult in the room, District Attorney Harvey Dent, who is hot on the case, trying to help Turner and solve the mystery of who killed Batman. Dent hasn’t transformed into Two-Face (yet), at least as the show begins.

The show is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, and written by the Batwoman scribes Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden serve as executive producers.

Though this is a Berlanti production, this show will not join returning shows The Flash and Superman & Lois as part of the network’s “Arrowverse,” interconnected DC hero shows all spawned from Arrow, which premiered in 2012. This show is also not related to the upcoming video game, which shares a plotline of Batman’s adopted kids investigating his murder.
