News of the new production location of the second season of Mr. and Mrs. Smith came not from Amazon Studios, which created and distributes the program, but from the Governor of California.

Governor Gavin Newsom revealed the series would be relocating to California on Wednesday at a press conference the recently approved $750M in funding for the state’s Film & TV Tax Credit Program.

We don’t know much about the next season of Amazon Prime’s popular spy series, apart from the fact that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine will not continue on with the show, but we do know it will be filmed in Los Angeles County. The first season was primarily filmed in New York with a few locations in Italy, including Lake Como and the Italian Dolomites.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is not the only production that will be filming in the Golden State with the state’s new reduced tax burdens; just last week, the commission approved 48 new films for $96M in tax credits.

But Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s relocation is a big deal for the California film and television industry, and the state’s head honcho. If one big budget production would relocate to the state with the right incentives in place, more will follow which would be a boon to California’s flagging production industry. The slowdown in productions in that state was exacerbated by the L.A. fires earlier this year.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith joins Prime Video’s Fallout as two of the highest profile series to move production back to California recently. HBO Max’s The Pitt, Hulu’s Paradise, and CBS’ NCIS: Origins are also filming in Cali.

Season one of Mr. and Mrs. Smith followed two strangers (Glover and Erskine) who have to pose as a married couple as they both begin new careers as spies, taking on new aliases, Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Glover created the series with Francesca Sloane, who will return as executive producer and showrunner for Season 2. Glover will stay on as executive producer. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is produced by New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios.
