‘Harry Potter’ Series Probably in Early Development for HBO Max
Harry Potter and the…Developing Series?
Although unconfirmed, new adventures featuring Harry, Hermione and Ron on the small screen are a definite possibility, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, and Variety, which quoted its own sources.
There have been rumors that the world of Harry Potter would end up on the small screen, but for right now, no writers or talent are currently attached to the project. Sources have told the publication that conversations have taken place with multiple writers for the putative series.
There is no word yet on what the focus of the show would be or what part of the Harry Potter timeline it would focus on should it move ahead. And Warner Bros and HBO Max aren’t in any rush to confirm anything.
Warner Bros and HBO Max said in a statement to Variety that “there are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.” though multiple sources have confirmed that the project is in the very early stages.
The Harry Potter book series is one of the most popular of all time, of course. The seven books in the series sold over 500 million copies worldwide and were adapted into a hit eight-film franchise, grossing nearly $8 billion worldwide so far. Two of five planned Fantastic Beast prequel films have been released, with the third of five planned films due out in 2022.
Warner Bros and HBO Max are very interested in expanding the world of Potter, which they control along with creator J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter is one of Warners’ most valuable pieces of intellectual property.
As the streaming wars continue to heat companies now must mine their best known IP to stay ahead of the competition. Disney alone recently announced dozens of shows set within the Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar Animation worlds.
Not everyone is thrilled at the idea of more Harry. Though Harry Potter is still popular, author Rowling has inspired a lot of backlash from the trans community and their allies after publicly insisting that transgender individuals should be defined by their biological sex, which inspired incredible backlash among former fans.
No dates to look forward to as of yet, but perhaps once the powers that be admit it’s actually happening, we’ll find out more.
