HBO Max Clowns Around: Streamer Releases Creepy Trailer for ‘It’ Prequel Series ‘It: Welcome to Derry’
Need a new show to binge? Looking for something about terrorized and murdered kids? HBO has what you need.
HBO Max released a trailer for the It prequel series It: Welcome to Derry on Tuesday. Set in the 1960s, the 9-part series is set in the 1960s and features a new group of kids who collectively deduce that something is very wrong in Derry – and that no one is coming to save them.

It: Welcome to Derry is based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel It, made into a TV miniseries in 1990, and a theatrical film in 2017. That film spawned a sequel, It Chapter Two, released in 2019.
Both films released in the 2010s starred Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, a shapeshifting killer who bubbles up from the sewers every 27 years to murder a new group of children.
It: Welcome to Derry will largely focus on a section of King’s novel that briefly describes events that happen in the 1960s. That story involves the Black Spot, a nightclub and bar that catered to Black patrons, and the horrific events that led to its burning.
“Every 27 years when It appears, It’s cycle is marked by two catastrophic events, one at the beginning and one in the end,” producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti told Entertainment Weekly in an interview.

The rest of the cast include Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe and Rudy Mancuso. Jason Fuchs wrote the teleplay for the first episode and also serves as co-showrunner on It: Welcome to Derry with executive producer Brad Caleb Kane. Andy Muschietti directs multiple episodes.
Though no premiere date is available, It: Welcome to Derry is expected to premiere on HBO Max this fall.
