HBO Max Has a New Animated Aquaman Miniseries, and It Looks Pretty Goofy
HBO Max dropped a trailer for its new Aquaman animated mini-series, and it is a definite departure from the Jason Momoa movie version. And not in a good way (as if a departure from Jason Momoa could ever be a good thing.)
No, this is more Mermaid Man than Momoa. Not to keep dunking on James Wan, who produces this show and whose movie Malignant came out this weekend to decidedly mixed reviews, but the Spongebob character comparison does seem apt.
Titled Aquaman: King Of Atlantis, the series comes from Marly Halper-Graser, the creator of Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Marly Halpern-Graser and Victor Courtright of ThunderCats Roar!, two updates of old intellectual properties that weren’t necessarily a big hit with their longtime fans.
This Aquaman doesn’t resemble Jason Momoa’s and is voiced by The Walking Dead’s Cooper Andrews, who plays King Ezekiel’s (Khary Payton) right hand man Jerry. The rest of the cast play characters we know from the movie: Gillian Jacobs as Mera, Thomas Lennon is Vulko, and Dana Snyder plays the Ocean Master.
In the trailer, Aquaman accepts the role of king of Atlantis while simultaneously struggling to get comfortable on his goofy seahorse throne. The blank expressions of the various fish-people he rules are reminiscent of the multitudes of unnamed underwater denizens on Spongebob, and Ocean Master doesn’t look terribly imposing, so this series is leaning into a goofy, fun vibe.
The official logline from the show reads, “The three-part animated mini-series event begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a LOT of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother, Ocean Master, who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!”
“This DC property is a fan-favorite rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max said in a statement. “On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit [Aquaman], we are certain Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming.”
On the live-action side, Wan’s DCEU Aquaman in is in production and scheduled to appear on the big screen next year. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will bring back Jason Momoa along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.
The show premieres on HBO Max on October 14
