Headed for the ’30s, Living in the ’90s: Fox/Hulu Greenlights ‘Baywatch’ and ‘X-Files’ Series for Next Year
At least two new shows from Fox/Hulu/20th Television are remakes or reboots steeped in ’90s nostalgia.
First, global sensation Baywatch is back as a regular series, coming this January to Fox network television. It’s a continuation of the series about a team of lifeguards which launched on NBC in fall of 1989, moved to syndication two years later, and spanned the decade, concluding in 1990.
Baywatch starred David Hasselhoff as the Mitch Buchannon, head of photogenic young people in red bathing suits who patrolled the beaches in Los Angeles. It spawned companion series like Baywatch: Hawaii (featuring Jason Momoa) and Baywatch Nights, as well as a 2017 movie starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. In its heyday, Baywatch was the most-watched show in the world, airing in more than 200 countries and at its peak reaching more than a billion viewers weekly, and launched the careers of Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra.
The new series serves as a continuation of the original Baywatch, and stars Stephen Amell (Arrow) as Hobie Buchannon, son of the character played by Hasselhoff. Hobie finds – or is found by – his daughter, Charlie Vale (Jessica Belkin), who shows up on his beach looking for a chance to prove herself worthy of the red swimsuit and her family name.

Hassie Harrison, Shay Mitchell, Thaddeus LaGrone, Noah Beck, and Brooks Nader also star. David Chokachi will reprise his original series role as Cody Madison, and several other cast members from the original incarnation of Baywatch are scheduled to reappear. Showrunner Matt Nix also serves as executive producer on the reboot along with McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and others. McG also directed the premiere episode.
On the more serious side, Hulu, the streaming service owned by 20th Television, which also owns Fox, finally greenlit director Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files.
The new series was announced in the trades today, and on The X-Files TV official Instagram account.
Coogler’s take on The X-Files will star Danielle Deadwyler (Rooster, The Harder They Fall) and Himesh Patel (The Odyssey) as FBI agents who take over a secret division investigating strange cases involving unexplained phenomena. It will air on both Hulu and Disney+. Deadwyler and Patel worked together before on the HBO Max limited series Station Eleven.

“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler in the post.
Coogler also said in a statement, “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.”
Carter will executive produce the reboot along with Coogler, The X-Files originally ran from 1993-2002 on Fox and spawned two feature films. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny starred for most of the original run and in the two movies that followed, The X-Files and The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The original series was brought back in 2016-18 for another two seasons, starring Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish taking the lead investigator roles. It also spun off X-Files characters for shows like Millennium and The Lone Gunmen.
Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Lochlyn Munro and Ben Foster also star in The X-Files. Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson, who won an Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on Coogler’s Sinners, composed the score for the pilot episode of the reboot.
No launch date for the Coogler version of The X-Files has been announced yet.
