Here it is, your moment of zen: Jon Stewart is returning to host the show that made him a political pundit.

Stewart, who last hosted TDS in 2015, will only host the show on Monday nights, and only through the next election cycle. He is also assuming the Executive Producer position for the show, which has been without a permanent host since Trevor Noah’s departure in December 2022.

Since Noah left the show, The Daily Show has relied on a revolving series of temporary hosts, like Hasan Minaj, Leslie Jones, Chelsea Handler, Charlamagne tha God, Sarah Silverman and Michelle Wolf. TDS correspondents Desi Lydic, Ronny Chiang, Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr. also took a turn at hosting their show. Wood Jr. was seen mouthing “please hire a host” during the Emmy Awards ceremony last week.

After Stewart left the show to pursue other career opportunities he hosted another political/social commentary talk show called The Problem With Jon Stewart on Apple TV Plus. That show was canceled in October 2023.

Stewart’s TDS stint started in 1999, when he took over from previous host Craig Kilborn. Under his tenure, the show shifted from being a satire of nightly news programs to offering politically-charged commentary and interviews with elected officials and political analysts along with the usual celebrity guests.

“Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,” Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks, said in a statement. “In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit.”
