After 2023, James Corden will sing no more.

Well, that’s probably not true: the Late Late Show host is known for being cast in musicals on a pretty regular basis, against the wishes of many. But the British actor will say goodbye to his late night gig in the summer of 2023, after eight and a half years of hosting, according to Deadline.

“It’s been it’s a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show. I’m thrilled to be extending [for a year],” Corden told Deadline. “I always thought I’d do it for five years and then leave and then I stayed on. I’ve really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure.”

Corden took over the gig from Craig Ferguson in 2014. He wasn’t well known in America at the time, though BBC America fans might have known him from the BBC show Gavin & Stacey, which he co-created. He created some popular show segments, including Drop The Mic, Spill Your Guts and Crosswalk Musical. The last of those bits notably stopped traffic on at least one occasion, with Corden drawing the ire of drivers who were forced to watch him thrusting his pelvis at cars while dressed as a mouse.

It’s his Carpool Karaoke segment that has been the most successful, however: the segment with Adele has been watched more than 250 million times on YouTube, while his journey with One Direction has racked up 189 million views. The Late Late Show YouTube page itself has had nearly 10 billion views and has over 27 million subscribers, the second highest in late-night.

CBS brass were keen to keep Corden and offered a variety of deals including a three-year extension, a two-year extension and a rolling one-year deal before he made his decision. “My bosses here at CBS have been incredibly supportive and extraordinarily patient with me while I made this decision,” Corden said.
