Hulu is bringing a beloved show back to the Futurama,

Hulu has finalized deals for 20 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s cult animated sci-fi comedy Futurama, and the show is set to debut in 2023. And while the majority of the series’ voice cast, including Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman, have inked deals to return, one key player will be missing.

John DiMaggio, who voices Bender, the ‘bot with a bad attitude, will not return for this run of the series. Deadline reports that the role is currently being recast ahead of the first table read on Monday. The decision was made after DiMaggio’s negotiations with Futurama studio 20th Television Animation came to a standstill.

Reportedly, there is a desire on both sides to bring DiMaggio back to reprise his role, but DiMaggio felt that his offer was not competitive based on the success and name recognition of the original series, though the offer was comparable with what was offered fellow leads West (Fry) and Sagal (Leela) who, after a back-and-forth, agreed to a deal.

Futurama has been pronounced dead and revived many times. It first aired on Fox from 1999-2003 before the network cancelled it midway through production on Season 4, Futurama was brought back in 2007 with four direct-to-DVD movies that subsequently aired as 30-minute episodes on Comedy Central.

Comedy Central ordered new seasons of the series for its return to television in June 2010, then canned it three years later. Futurama and Family Guy, which also was cancelled prematurely before going on to great success after its resurrection, were helped by being picked up by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which served to increase interest in the shows.

“I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future… or really anything other than the present,” said Cohen in a statement.

Groening added, “it’s a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one more time before we get canceled abruptly again.”

Not only beloved by its fans, the show earned six Emmy Awards, including two Outstanding Animated Program, seven Annie Awards, two Environmental Media Awards and two WGA Awards. Over its seven seasons spanning two decades, 140 original episodes were produced, and every episode is currently available on Hulu.
