The most sensational, celebrational, Muppetational show will finally be available for streaming.

After a week of teasing “something big is coming” on Twitter, Tuesday it was announced that the original The Muppet Show is heading to Disney+. The comedy variety series that starred Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and so many more, will begin streaming on Friday, February 19th.

“It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more,” said Kermit the Frog in an announcement.

“Today, I’m proud to say: ‘It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus tonight!’ And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony, I can only add: ‘Sorry, guys, but….here we go again.’”

When the show premieres, it will be the first time that seasons 4 and 5 will be available to fans. The first three seasons of the show were released exclusively on DVD by Disney, but seasons 4 and 5 were not included. The show has also never appeared on any digital outlets like iTunes or Amazon for purchase.

Created by Jim Henson and premiering in 1976, the prime-time series was a variety show, featuring new recurring characters in sketch comedy and musical numbers interspersed with much of the action taking place backstage at the Muppet theater. The show took the Sesame Street character of Kermit the Frog into a new outlet meant to appeal to adults as well.

The series featured A-list celebrity hosts, including Steve Martin, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Vincent Price, Julie Andrews, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Gene Kelly, and Mark Hamill. During the run of the series, no guest star ever appeared more than once.

The Muppets Show ran from the late ’70s to the early ’80s and received lots of critical acclaim throughout its run, including four Emmy Awards out of 21 nominations and three BAFTA Awards out of nine nominations.

The series was also awarded a Peabody Award for “maintaining a consistently high standard for family viewing on American television.”

The Muppets have been experiencing something of a renaissance of late, with new episodes of Muppets Now on Disney+, a Fraggle Rock revival on Apple TV+ and a renewal of The Dark Crystal series on Netflix. Sesame Street is also still airing new episodes on HBO Max.
