July is Here and It’s Hot Outside, So Stay In, Stay Cool and Stream These New Shows
Summer is here and it is hotter than ever, so why not plan to stay in the comfort of the AC as much as you can? To that end, we have compiled a list of the new shows we are most looking forward to on streaming this month.
Monsters at Work (July 2nd, Disney+)
The gang from Monsters, Inc. returns in this workplace comedy taking place after the 2001 movie. Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their roles as monsters Mike and Sully, still at work in the scream factory. Among the rest of the new and returning cast are Ben Feldman, Mindy Kling, Henry Winkler, Aisha Tyler, Jennifer Tilly, John Ratzenberger, Bonnie Hunt, and Bob Peterson.
Gossip Girl (July 8th, HBO Max)
XOXO…a new group of upper-class high school-aged Manhattanites are pitted against the all-knowing but unknown Gossip Girl, voiced in the reboot by Kristen Bell, who did the honors in the original CW series. The new iteration comes from creator Joshua Safran, who worked on the series’ original incarnation.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (July 8th, Netflix)
Set in between the games Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 where zombie viruses are a known threat in this world, but they have yet to become a global concern, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is a side-story in the Resident Evil universe about fan-favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The series is not live action: voice actors Nick Apostolides and Stephanie Panisello reprise their roles as Leon and Claire, respectively, keeping Infinite Darkness in the same universe as the video games
Leverage: Redemption (July 9th, IMDb TV)
Another show built on an established property, Redemption brings back the former TNT heist dreamed with nearly all of its original cast in tow. The supersized reboot of the show where the Leverage team helps the little guy get justice will have 16 new episodes with the first eight arriving on the same. The show will feature episodes directed by creator Dean Devlin, Jonathan Frakes, and cast newcomer Noah Wyle.
Wellington Paranormal (July 11th, The CW)
This spinoff of 2014’s What We Do in the Shadows has aired multiple seasons in New Zealand, but American audiences will get their first chance to see it this month. The show stars Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary as two police officers who encounter all kinds of creatures and phenomena on their patrols in the show, which takes place before the FX program named after the movie. The first two episodes are directed by Jemaine Clement.
The White Lotus (July 11th, HBO)
Enlightened‘s Mike White wrote and directed this ensemble-cast limited series about a group of people (played by Connie Britton, Murray Bartlett, Jennifer Coolidge, and Jake Lacy, among others) whose lives intertwine over the course of a week at a tropical resort. A death adds a murder-mystery element to the show’s comedic class commentary. The six-episode series was filmed on location in Hawaii late last year.
The Beast Must Die (July 12th, AMC)
Based on a 1938 novel by Nicholas Blake, this six-episode drama stars Jared Harris and Cush Jumbo and is about a woman grieving the hit-and-run death of her son who gets no help from the police and who seeks revenge from the man she thinks was responsible for his death, getting help from a detective with PTSD fighting corruption within his department.
Dr. Death (July 15th, Peacock)
Based on the horrifying true-crime podcast of the same name, Dr. Death tells the tale of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), whose Dallas-area practice left numerous patients maimed after going in for what they assumed would be routine spinal procedures. Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater, AnnaSophia Robb, and Grace Gummer star, and Stephen Frears directed the series’ opening two episodes.
American Horror Stories (July 15th, FX on Hulu)
Ryan Murphy turned his ever-changing American Horror Story into an anthology series, swapping out storylines with each episode with AHS veterans filling the cast, including Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Denis O’Hare, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Angelica Ross, Adina Porter, Leslie Grossman, Finn Wittrock, Cody Fern, Taissa Farmiga, and Dylan McDermott.
Schmigadoon! (July 16th, Apple TV+
This website already teased this show, which is a modern take on the 1940s musical Brigadoon. It stars Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong as a troubled couple who discovers a magical village while out on a hike. The two find they can’t leave the village, where everyone engages in song and dance numbers at the drop of a hat, until they each find true love. The cast also includes the musically minded Jane Krakowksi, Fred Armisen, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Jaime Camil, and Aaron Tveit.
SurrealEstate (July 16th, Syfy)
Tim Rozon stars in this drama series about a realtor who specializes in selling homes touched by the supernatural. Co-starring fellow Schitt’s Creek vet Sarah Levy, this Canadian production will premiere on the same night in that country as well.
Turner & Hooch (July 21st, Disney+)
The 2021 reboot of the 1989 Tom Hanks flick finds Josh Peck putting on the badge (this time, Turner’s a U.S. Marshal) with trusty mastiff pal Hooch helping him sniff out the bad guys. The pilot is directed by McG and written by Burn Notice creator Matt Nix. The show is part of the new Disney+ Wednesday TV release schedule.
Sexy Beasts (July 21st, Netflix)
Also mentioned on this website, Sexy Beasts is a dating reality show where faces of the participants are obscured by creepy masks, though their bodies are undisguised. Each episode will feature one contestant going out on dates with three different people, then naming one of them their “sexy beast,” at which point, they’ll get to see each other’s faces. Rob Delaney narrates the program, which has already received a second season pickup.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (July 23rd, Netflix)
Kevin Smith’s take on frenemies He-Man and Skeletor is a sequel to the original series. The show pits the heroic warriors of Castle Grayskull as they search for the missing Sword of Power. Smith says the show will fill in some gaps and expand on storylines that weren’t fully realized during the first go-around of the show. The animated series is voiced by a cast that includes Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Chris Wood, and Lena Headey.
The Pursuit of Love (July 30th, Amazon Prime Video)
Emily Mortimer writes and directs this three-part adaptation of the 1945 Nancy Mitford novel. Set between the two World Wars, it stars Lily James and Emily Beecham star as a pair of cousins making their way through life and embracing both the riotous and painful aspects of their unconventional family. The show also co-stars Fleabag‘s Andrew Scott, The Wire‘s Dominic West, Dolly Wells, Shazad Latif, Freddie Fox, and Mortimer herself.
