Philomena Cunk will bring her unique interviewing style to yet another mockumentary series, this time one exploring the past, present and future of the world of film.

In Cunk on Cinema, comedian Diane Morgan will resurrect her Philomena Cunk character to sit down with such important movie business luminaries like director Michael Bay and actor Benedict Cumberbatch in a three-part series that will “uncover the invention of the camera, to the New Wave filmmakers of the 60s, right up to the entrance of CGI and what the future of AI holds. Cunk will attempt to demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?”

Morgan’s comically dimwitted character Philomena Cunk has been featured on other mock docuseries like Cunk on Life, Cunk on Earth, Cunk on Shakespeare and Cunk on Britain. Both the Life and Earth series can be found on Netflix, which will also air Cunk on Cinema.

Black Mirror creator/producer Charlie Brooker and Morgan lead the writing team, which will include Ben Caudell, Erika Ehler, Eli Goldstone, Jason Hazeley, Dan Maier, Joel Morris, Michael Odewale, Kali Varghese and Sam Ward. Al Campbell (Cunk on Life) will direct.

In addition to Bey and Cumberbatch, you can expect to see interviews with other industry insiders, like Oscar-nominated Daniel Pemberton (composer; Project Hail Mary), Steven E. de Souza (screenwriter; Die Hard, Commando), Oscar-nominated Seamus McGarvey (cinematographer; Avengers Assemble, Atonement), Mark Kermode (critic), Mark Cousins (film maker, author of The Story of Film: An Odyssey), Isabel Stevens (managing editor of Sight and Sound magazine), Helen O’Hara (editor at large at Empire Magazine, author of various books about cinema), Catherine Bray (critic at Screen International) and Bryony Dixon (curator of silent film, BFI).

No release date for Cunk on Cinema, which will air on the BBC and Netflix, has been announced yet.
